Our fellow year 1 class, Room 4 hosted the school assembly today. They had a space theme and it was gorgeous! Our theme will be ‘under the water’ as this is our term 3 topic. You are welcome to start thinking about mermaid, fish, shark, underwater type costumes for the assembly. As well as the infamous song ‘Baby Shark’, (still pondering options but it might be a dance contender), we will be doing this beautiful ‘sign, sing and smile’ song which is the clip for you to watch above. I know many of you are practising at home already. We will be in full assembly prep mode next term but it is always good to be super organised.
Special Students
I just wanted to acknowledge these two Room 5 super stars as they had to wait a really long time for their school certificates. It is no reflection on how deserving they are! Well done Finn and Alexandra who never once asked when their turn was and every fortnight congratulated the other students. I am so proud of you. You are both very special students to Room 5.
Ms Ali
Ms Ali has put so much of her own time into the amazing space art work that will be put up tomorrow. Come and have a look! Jess will be revamping the classroom tomorrow, moving current art around to make room for the beautiful space art that the children have done over three sessions. Ms Ali was in here late yesterday afternoon in her own time finishing them off and I know she has done lots at night also. Isn’t she amazing? Love and dedication – it is much appreciated Ms Ali.
A sneaky peek…
Orbitting Children
We talked some more about orbitting today. The sun, the earth and the moon and how they orbit around each other. We had a go pretending to be the sun, earth and moon.
Reading
We had a go at some buddy reading today.
Julian and Alexandra had a busy reading session doing lots of activities.
Mars Writing
Jess taught Alexandra and Julian how to google facts about Mars. We always google and add ‘for kids’ at the end.
We did some great Mars writing today. So many of the children have finished their first writing book. In year one I believe children need to be writing every day to learn the skills required.
It’s Time Teacher’s Campaign
I know picking your children up early today is an inconvenience to you so apologies for that. As a Mum I know it is a tricky juggle, (although Olivia was thrilled to have a half day hee hee hee). For me this action teachers are currently taking is as much about being a Mum with children currently in the education system as me being a teacher.
The teacher shortage is horrifying to be honest. I won’t bore you with the stats but the numbers are alarming. For me this campaign is about the recruitment of great people into the profession and the retention of so many fabulous teachers. Education is so important and some value needs to be given back into the profession in order for children to thrive in the future. Most things always come down to people in the end, you need good people. We need to fix this.
We Played Buzz For Maths
We played a skip counting maths game called Buzz today.
Word Work
Phonics knowledge is great for working out unknown words. We have words that we want children to recognise instantly – these are the words that are commonly used in the English language and are essential for reading and writing. Other words we need to learn techniques for sounding out.
Alphabet Work
Alphabet and phonics work is so important for our new little friends who have just started school.
