Reading is one of the most important things we get underway when children start school. We start with alphabet knowledge, phonic sounds, and learning commonly used words “like magic”, (which basically means children recognise and say words such as ‘the’, ‘and’, ‘is’, ‘it’ straight away). Reading everyday is so important. For the children that have been at school for longer, the focus starts moving on comprehension and follow up work.
Buddy Club
On Friday afternoon we met our Buddy Class, Mr Harper’s year 5 group of children. It was very exciting and our room was chocka – big and little people everywhere. We will look forward to doing lots of different things with our buddies on Friday afternoons – buddy reading, buddy crafts, buddy sports…oh the possibilities. Will be fun!
Maths – Counting
We have done counting in maths this week and did some activities where we muddled up the numbers and we had to put them back in order. Next week we will do some basic facts as we are still seeing what we already know, what we have remembered and we will set some new goals.
Yoga Kids
Our topic for this term is wellbeing and we have started doing yoga in the mornings to increase our zen-like well-being. If you google Cosmic Kids on You Tube your little people can show you at home. So far Frozen Cosmic Kids yoga and Going on a Bear Hunt Cosmic Kids yoga are our favourite routines.
Wonderful Wednesday
We did some great writing today – “I like…” sentences. We are learning to write in lower case letters, not capitals and learning all about what a sentence looks like. Some of the children that have been here longer are writing ‘wow’ sentences.
We found out there was a digger on the bottom field so we went to have a look!
For sport today we joined Room 4 and played lots of fun games with the giant parachute.
For reading we are learning all about our phonics sounds and how to use those sounds to say words. Those children that have been here for a bit longer are learning how to do follow up work about the books we have read.
Finally today Julian was our sticker leader and handed out stickers to children who were doing a great job with their maths learning and activities. Stella was our tidy up sticker fairy.
Monday 5 February
Today we welcomed Tselmeg into Room 5. We had lots of fun at Jump Jam this morning in the hall! We wrote about our weekends in writing and we all enjoyed reading new books that the children will take home in their book bags to share with families.
Mrs Brown and Mrs Turner
We are your year 1 teachers and can’t wait to work with you and your beautiful children.
Bits and Bobs from Week 1
We have made lots of new friends this week, discovered where everything is kept in the classroom and we have talked lots about smiling and being kind to each other. It is important to care for our new friends and all our Room 5 family members.
The Faces of Room 5
All the gorgeous faces of Room 5.
Week 1 Adventures
Hi everyone. What a lovely first week of learning we have had. We have settled into school routines quickly and wrote some lovely sentences about why we are special. We also did some great holiday dye art with some writing. It is also wonderful to see the children getting into the routine of reading and taking books home. Happy days. Little Room 5 has a been a busy smiley place this week. I wonder what adventures next week will bring?
